Nail Cutting
Problems: Many people are unable to manage their own foot care for many medical reasons including arthritis, poor eyesight, poor mobility, diabetes etc. Treatment: A podiatrist is able to cut or trim nails including those that are thickened and curved providing a comfortable feeling in footwear. Nails managed by a Podiatrist are much less likely to become ingrown. |
Ingrown Nails
Problems: An ingrown nail is a condition where the corner of the nail grows into the skin. The pressure exerted by the nail on the skin can be quite painful. The area can become red, swollen and inflamed. - If the nail penetrates the skin, bacteria can enter the wound causing an infection. - If an ingrown nail has become painful, it will not usually resolve itself without treatment. Treatment: A podiatrist can remove the offending section of nail ( with or without anaesthetic) to relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms are persistent, then a surgical procedure can be performed for permanent relief. - If antibiotics are required, you will need to see your GP for a prescription of appropriate medication. - Treatment by a podiatrist usually involves immediate relief. |
Corns and Callus
Problems: Corns and callus are the body’s response to pressure on skin. The body produces extra layers of skin to protect these areas. These layers produce additional pressure on nerve endings which produce the pain response. - Callus may be formed over bony deformities and due to poor fitting footwear. - The areas of pressure commonly seen under the foot are at the forefoot joints, at the end of a hammer toe and even between toes. Or they can present on the top of the toes. - Commonly callus is also seen surrounding heels in the form of hardened and/or cracked skin. - The corns are concentrated points of pressure. Treatment: These corns and calluses are usually debrided with a scalpel and sanding discs. Corns and calluses can become a more serious problem (including ulcers) in diabetics and people with neuropathy and poor circulation. |
Heel Pain
Problems: Heel pain is a common condition which may be caused by a wide variety of conditions. The pain may be experienced under the heel or behind the heel. - Pain may be present all the time or intermittently eg first steps in the morning. - Conditions such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis are commonly seen and treated by podiatrists. - The causes may be due to inappropriate footwear, poor biomechanics eg flat feet, over exertion during sports or a single incident. Treatment: Can involve orthotics to improve foot posture, modification to activity and exercises to relieve symptoms. |
Forefoot Pain
Problems: Forefoot pain is a common complaint. It can be caused by multiple conditions including neuroma, bursitis, plantar plate tear, tendonitis and stress fractures. Treatment: Diagnosis and treatment require a thorough investigation into symptoms, onset and possibly Xrays and/or Ultrsound scans. |
